Did you know . . .
Good Counsel has provided 572,336 nights of shelter and days of compassionate care to 6,230 women and children since our first home opened in 1985.
Since 1985, nearly 900 babies have been born to mothers living at our homes.
Last year, Good Counsel homes had an occupancy rate of 100%. It is above 100% during 2013. How can occupancy go above full? When every individual bedroom is full and a mother is on the street, Good Counsel will take her in using an emergency bedroom or a cot in a living room or even the chapel. Whatever it takes to safely protect mother and child from the elements or abuse, Good Counsel will respond. No mom who is in need is turned away.
Last year Good Counsel moms had a total of 8,717 individual one-on-one counseling sessions. Additionally, our moms received 1,177 Life Skills classes from staff, volunteers and through on-line programs.
Good Counsel has helped homes open in 8 other states in rural, suburban and urban areas. We’ve also helped consult with dozens more maternity homes around the country. Good Counsel is currently helping form a national maternity home coalition to further assist women and children in need.
Thousands of others have been helped in person through Good Counsel’s outreach and follow-up programs or over the telephone.
Additionally, the Good Counsel 24/7 helpline (1-800-723-8331) received 3,267 calls last year. More than 33,200 people have been helped through this 24/7 helpline since it began.
In December 1999, Good Counsel opened the Daystar home in Harrison, New York, a unique residence for pregnant women who have mental illness and may also be dual diagnosed with an addiction. More than 230 mothers have been helped in this special home.
The Good Counsel main administrative offices are in Hoboken, where the first home opened in 1985. Good Counsel provides much, much more than food, shelter, counseling and parenting workshops. Assistance is also provided with daycare, educational advancement, job training and placement, along with the necessary compassionate love to guide mothers who’ve been rejected by family and friends.
Good Counsel currently has four homes as well as their post abortion ministry, Lumina/Hope & Healing after Abortion (877-Lumina1), which assists men, women, and siblings affected by abortion.
Much help is given to Good Counsel by dedicated volunteers, and 400 volunteers have donated thousands of hours tutoring, cleaning, painting, repairing, fundraising, and much more annually.
