The powerfully realistic film, Gimmie Shelter, opens nationwide Friday, January 24, 2014. Based on a true story, the gritty and compelling film tells the story of Agnes “Apple” Bailey (Vanessa Hudgens) from her devastating childhood to finding herself pregnant and homeless as a teenager. Gimmie Shelter highlights the importance of being a field hospital for the wounded of this world and the desperate and vital necessity shelters are for those who have nowhere else to go.
“A moving film with an uplifting message of hope and the dignity of human life – and the fact that it is based on real people and events makes it all the more compelling. I hope that this film finds a wide audience – particularly among teens and young adults!” Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York
The film, inspired by true events and the shelter where Apple begins her new life, is based on Several Sources Shelters in New Jersey, founded by Kathy DiFiore. Sadly, Apple’s story is not at all unique and there could be a film like Gimmie Shelter released every week of the year with all of the homeless, pregnant women who need not only a safe place to sleep, but also love, guidance, and support.
Good Counsel is blessed to be part of the solution for women in crisis, but we continue to pray that at some point we are no longer needed and the sad stories run out.
We encourage everyone to see Gimmie Shelter and pray for all the women out there who have their own true stories to tell. There are many, many ways to help support women like Apple. Click here for ways to support Good Counsel Homes so we can open the door when any pregnant women needs shelter.
