Re-Open the Door to the Staten Island Home

The Staten Island Good Counsel Home opened its doors and hearts to create a home for homeless pregnant women and their children on November 21,1987, on the Feast of the Presentation of Mary and just days before Thanksgiving.  Like all of our homes, the Staten Island home provided a family-like atmosphere and an individualized and comprehensive continuum of support in a maternity setting. DayStar Home Heals & Helps

Since Good Counsel opened its DayStar Home in 1999 on the grounds of St. Vincent’s Behavioral Healthcare Hospital, this unique residence for pregnant women, who have mental illness and who may also be dual diagnosed with an addiction, has helped mothers make the difficult transition from suffering with long-term mental and physical challenges to become stable and loving mothers and productive citizens in the communities in which they live. Christopher Bell, Executive Director of Good Counsel Homes, recently traveled to North Dakota to share his many years of experience in helping mothers and children.  Chris was the guest of Mary Pat Jahner, who is the Director of Saint Gianna’s Maternity Home in Minto.  As part of their 10th anniversary celebration, Chris was invited to speak with a group of priests of the Diocese of Fargo and also with the Friends of Gianna House and their Board of Directors at their annual retreat. Marathoners for Moms

The North Face Endurance Challenge is a marathon that is not for the faint of heart.  Participants who take on the 26.2 mile trail in Bear Mountain State Park journey along the western shoreline of the Hudson River and through the rugged terrain in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains.  Runners of all levels and experience will often cite a motivating purpose behind their wanting to push the limits of their bodies and to train ever further.  For three men running the marathon on May 3, 2014, that motivation is Good Counsel Homes.
