Forgiveness After Abortion

Funny thing about forgiveness, we seem to think we just forgive and that is the end of it.  But, the truth is, forgiving deep hurts takes a lot of time and most times has nothing to do with our feelings.

Forgiveness is not a one time shot. It often is a decision we need to make over and over again. When asked how many times we should forgive someone, Jesus tells us, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.” That sure is a lot of times! Yet as we work to forgive, especially about our abortion, we often find we need to do it over and over again.

One of the hardest acts of forgiveness I ever had was with my father who pressured me to abort my unborn child. I wrote about it here.

But he is not the only person I have struggled to forgive, it is a lesson I have found I need to learn over and over again. I need to choose to let go of the pain and resentment surrounding certain people and circumstances because I no longer want them to rule my life and dictate the direction of my actions.

Of course, this is impossible without the help of God. In my humanity, I want to lash out with words, or even worse. I want to instill the pain that I have felt on the person I feel has caused it. Forgiveness is way beyond any capabilities I have on my own. Yet, I have a model in both Mary our Mother of Mercy, who instead of rejecting us for the death of her innocent Son, embraces us, loving us to healing, and most of all the example of Jesus Himself, who from the cross makes the ultimate act of forgiveness.

Who are you having trouble forgiving in your abortion? Are you trying to move past it, choosing to forgive, or are you clinging to the pain and hurt to your own detriment? As for me, I will choose to forgive again, and again and again, and however many times it takes me to free my soul for loving Christ, and hopefully someone will be able to see in me His unconditional and their life will be changed forever.
