The landscaping around our Riverside Home is looking especially bright these days thanks to one of our very special Resident Assistants, Clare Kirk. Clare has been with Good Counsel since even before we opened the doors in South Jersey. She is also a member of our overnight staff and has spent many hours caring for both moms and babies. She is affectionately known as “Grandmom Clare.” Read More
August 2014 - Good Counsel
It would be an understatement to say that everyone at Good Counsel works hard because our mission lends itself to attracting the type of person who goes above and beyond in their work, doing more than what’s expected, always willing to help out in any way possible. Perhaps some of the hardest working people at Good Counsel are our Resident Advisors. Our “RA’s” as they are affectionately known are our “forces on the ground,” literally the hands and feet of Christ working in our homes every day. Think of them as being a “mom” to all the resident moms and their babies and other children. Our RA’s work in shifts covering each home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Read More
The day Molly arrived at the front door of our Good Counsel home on Staten Island was a rainy Wednesday afternoon in February. She was 26 years old and pregnant — not a good day to be homeless and out on the street. Molly had been in an abusive relationship with her child’s father and he was demanding an abortion. Fearful for the safety of both herself and her unborn child, she fled to her parents’ home.
In an unusual entrance to our program, Molly was accompanied by both of her parents, who are disabled. Molly was born and raised on Staten Island, and her family was familiar with our services. Her parents pleaded for Molly to be placed into our program and specifically our Staten Island Home. They could not house their daughter and her baby in their one bedroom apartment and had limited income and resources. Read More
In case you missed it, Good Counsel was featured on EWTN when Chris Bell joined Fr. Andrew Apostoli, C.F.R., on Sunday Night Prime to discuss Pope Francis’s teaching on life as well as Chris’s work in the pro-life movement. Fr. Andrew and Chris covered a lot of topics emphasizing the mercy of God and the masterpiece of life. They also talked about the many ways in which Good Counsel advances the culture of life, helping homeless, pregnant moms and babies in crisis. They also talked about our post abortion ministry, Lumina, which offers hope and healing for all those suffering from a past abortion. Read More
“The promise of God is to be with us through all of life’s transitions. God will never leave you or forsake you. May you find comfort in God’s constant love. Know that my prayers are with you at this time.”
It’s been a while since I have visited the Exhale site where they continue their best efforts remove the “stigma” from abortion. The quote above is one of the sayings you can chose at “Exhale Pro Voice” with their selection of E-Cards to send to someone who has just had an abortion. Here are their other options to go with the peaceful photos of nature they have chosen to be on the front of the cards. Too bad the reality of abortion is anything but peaceful! Read More
Emmanuel House International (“EHI”) needs you like the pregnant moms in crisis need Emmanuel House today!
EHI, with God’s people (read YOU), serves pregnant and parenting moms who are in crisis in Putnam County and in neighboring Northern Westchester and Eastern Dutchess Counties, New York. EHI, conceived by Executive Director Rita O’Brien, heard the call of women and babies in need years ago and has been helping in many ways by counseling and offering material assistance. She also heard the call of local churches, community organizations, and resource providers to fill the large void in the county’s available services for women, thereby allowing EHI to come to fruition as a crisis pregnancy and after-birth support service. I would like to share with you the following from Fr. Jeremiah Myriam Shryock, C.F.R. Fr. Jeremiah has assisted in the Men’s Entering Canaan mission as well as with weekend retreats. If you are a man, or you know a man who many be suffering, please share Fr. Jeremiah’s words with them and let them know that there is hope, there is healing.
You can tell a lot about a person by the people they hang around with. Someone, I forgot who, once said, “Show me a man’s friends and I will show you the man.”
Our moms at Good Counsel are busy ladies! They spend time taking part in programs, frequently meet with their case manager, and also attend nutrition and parenting classes. The women spend lots of time furthering their education, securing training for future employment, or polishing their resumes so they can actively look for a good job to provide for themselves and their families. At the same time, our moms are taking care of newborns, infants, and sometimes older children. Read More
