Success on Staten Island

The day a child heads out the door for the first day of kindergarten is a monumental event for any parent. It’s a huge step for both parent and child and marks the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the family. The first day of kindergarten for a child who was born at a Good Counsel Home is a celebration of everything that we strive to do each and every day as we carry out our mission. Just this month we were so happy to hear from a former Good Counsel mom, Molly, whose daughter started kindergarten this year. Molly is shining example of what can happen when we all work together, with His Grace, to promote a culture of life and love.

In 2009, Molly arrived at the front door of our home on Staten Island on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in February. She was 26 years old and 7 months pregnant. Like so many of our moms, Molly had been in an abusive relationship with her child’s father and he was demanding that she have an abortion. Fearful for the safety of both herself and her unborn child, she fled to her parents’ home.

Unfortunately, Molly’s parents, disabled and living in a one-bedroom apartment with limited income and resources, were unable to take Molly in and provide what she and her baby desperately needed. Staten Island having been their home, Molly’s parents were familiar with Good Counsel and so they pleaded for Molly to be placed into our program and specifically our Staten Island Home. They were confident that Molly and their unborn grandchild would be safe, well cared for, and supported. Molly was welcomed into our Staten Island home with open arms. She gave birth to her beautiful Ariana that May.

During her time at Good Counsel, Molly participated in the many programs that we offer, including Budgeting & Vocational Assistance, Parenting and Nutrition Classes, as well as programs on Spirituality and Chastity. Today, Molly lives on her own with her daughter and works as a store manager. “The road hasn’t been easy, but it sure has been worth it,” Molly said. “I have a great career and I always have the support and love from my Good Counsel Family. Truly, they guided me and gave me the direction I needed to become the independent woman I am today.”

This is what your donations do. When you donate to Good Counsel, you support life in limitless ways.
