Good Counsel’s Response to Burlington County Times

Posted by | Oct 31, 2014 | No Comments

Two stories published by the Burlington County Times on October 29, 2014, in both print and online editions, included numerous factual errors or erroneous statements regarding Good Counsel, Inc. and the home that it operates in Riverside, New Jersey.

In an article entitled “State probes Riverside shelter’s solicitations of homeless food stamps” the errors begin in the headline, as residents and staff call Good Counsel a home, never a shelter. That seemingly small mischaracterization creates a larger misunderstanding throughout this article. Read More

His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, was just in Rome for the historic Synod of Bishops, and the day after he returned home, October 21st, he made a visit to the Good Counsel Home in Spring Valley, New York.  Cardinal Dolan’s pastoral visit to our home is the perfect precursor as Good Counsel approaches 30 years of ministry to homeless, pregnant mothers, babies, and children. Pray for Father Benedict

Over the last several days, my work here at Good Counsel has been focused on covering the news of the death of our Co-Founder, Fr. Benedict Groeschel.  As a content writer and social media administrator it’s my job to get the message out, share, engage, and curate content.  I edit photos, write blogs, post, tweet, like, share, etc., etc.  While I’ve been working, I’ve kept my copy of one of his books on my desk – opened to where he signed it for me.  It’s been a treasured memory of our short meeting and conversation, and now is even more significant. The parishioners of Mater Ecclesiae Church in Berlin, New Jersey recently held a fundraising campaign sponsored by their Knights of Columbus Council #12833.  Much more than a shelter, our presence in Riverside, New Jersey is a real home for local pregnant and parenting homeless mothers and their children.  Grand Knight Louis DiLoreo visited our home and presented a check for $1,200 to our moms and babies. Remembering Our Co-Founder, Fr. Benedict Groeschel, CFR

Posted by | Oct 4, 2014 | 2 Comments

My very good friend, Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, C.F.R., died yesterday on the same day as St. Francis of Assisi, after praying a rosary. He was a renowned Christian retreat director, author, preacher, teacher, counselor, and guide to many, perhaps the most well-known priest in the United States. It was my privilege to call him co-founder of Good Counsel Homes, my spiritual director, and my friend.

Fr. Benedict and I met during the winter of 1980 while I was at a mission helping homeless and runaway kids in Times Square. He came during the most difficult day I had there, gave a homily filled with practical as well as spiritual insights which began a long personal collaboration in helping the poor and helping those who help others.
