What a way to begin Respect Life Month with the passing of our beloved co-founder, Father Benedict Joseph Groeschel, C.F.R.
Father Benedict was chairman of our Good Counsel Board of Directors from day one, almost 30 years ago right up to his death on October 3, the eve of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
Father Benedict taught us how to love the poor and respect the value of each baby conceived, and he taught us how to die with dignity, and he suffered greatly offering up his pain for the benefit of others. He will be missed by millions around the world, but through our faith we believe we will see him again.
Serving the poorest of the poor was at the very heart of a great deal of Father Benedict’s work. Even the many books he authored, retreats and conferences he spoke at were meant to be an outreach to the poor, and he would often say the poorest of the poor are the homeless, pregnant women at Good Counsel.
Father Benedict often mentioned Daystar, Good Counsel’s home on the grounds of St. Vincent Hospital in Harrison, New York, where pregnant women suffering with a mental illness and/or substance abuse problem can choose life. It is one of the few such places in the US where this outreach is offered. This specialty was only possible because of Father Benedict and his loving care for the poorest of the poor.
While we are sorrowful about our loss we can find comfort in knowing he is in a better place.
As a wonderful Respect Life Month activity, please pray for Father Benedict’s soul, pray that others may be inspired by the life of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, and work more earnestly to love and care for the poor and help build a culture of life.
