On March 10, 1985, invoking the patronage of Mary, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Father Benedict Groeschel, CFR, and Christopher Bell opened Good Counsel’s first door to homeless, pregnant mothers in need in Hoboken, New Jersey.
- In the last 30 years Good Counsel has…
- Had approximately 900 babies born
- Ministered to 6,230 resident mothers
- Provided more than 600,000 nights of shelter
- Counseled 30,000 over the 24/7 National Helpline
- Assisted in the establishment of 9 maternity homes in 8 states
Currently, Good Counsel operates four homes, three in the New York City greater metro area and one outside of Camden, New Jersey. We are the largest private program for homeless mothers in the United States. In 2016, we plan to re-open the Staten Island home.
Good Counsel demonstrates that the cycle of poverty can be broken, and a crisis pregnancy can be a healing experience, leading a homeless mom toward a more prosperous, healthy, and even spiritual life with God.
Good Counsel is a family for those in need, serving God who is the Father of the Orphan, defender of the widow, and who gives the lonely a home to live in. (Psalm 68). Our Lord’s call to serve the disadvantaged compels us to offer love, shelter, and the opportunity to grow in self-respect and independence. We invoke the patronage of Mary, Our Lady of Good Counsel, to help us protect mothers in need and to love their children from the moment of conception.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude and blessings to have been part of 30 years of this much needed, challenging at times, but always rewarding, pro-life ministry. None of it would have been possible without your love and support, you who are our Good Counsel family. We are buoyed by your prayers as we help each woman take that next good step in their life.
We invite you to share your thoughts about Good Counsel in the comments below or offer some words of encouragement to our current mothers in residence.
We hope to see you on the 21st!
