“I’m homeless and with child. I need help.” Nancy emailed at 2 a.m.
What would you do?
“I’m an 18 year old female, 6 months pregnant, currently unemployed looking for a job, and just got put out of my home, I have nowhere nor anyone who has the room for me to stay with them, please I need help!” Jan emailed from Toledo.
How could you help?
Desperate, heartbreaking messages are coming in now every day. Good Counsel staff responds every hour, online, on the phone and in person, thanks to you. You are responding, you are helping because of your support.
Sometimes the email messages are much longer filled with pain and fear:
“My friend is 8 months pregnant and homeless. The only place she can go is back to an abusive alcoholic’s home that has assaulted her in the past. I can’t help because I will get kicked out of my apartment and my kid and I would be homeless. She is already having contractions and needs a place before her baby is born. Please help. I don’t know where to go to get her help and she is the kindest person you will ever meet that doesn’t deserve this. Please, even if you could just point me in the direction. To go to get her the help she needs. She is a good Christian 19 year old that doesn’t need to have her baby before she finds a home.”
More than 5,000 people will call or email Good Counsel asking for help this year. It costs about $1,600 a week to operate our 24 hour a day, 7-day a week helpline center. Any particular call or email may take hours over several days.
Whether the middle of the day or the middle of the night, when a frightened, despairing pregnant girl reaches the ear of Good Counsel’s staff, she may pour out her heart and troubles non-stop until she’s out of breath, says Sabrina Coleman, who’s been responding to Good Counsel’s intake calls for 14 years.
A gift of $21.34, on average, will help us give comfort to a frantic pregnant mother in need. Maybe, it will save the life of her baby. Could you give a gift of $100 to help four or five mothers and babies in need today? Please give now.
