Our home on Staten Island has been undergoing renovations with the goal of reopening its doors for women in a crisis pregnancy in the local area. We are excited to report that we are on target for a late summer reopen date! Thanks to the prayers and financial support of donors and friends during the last three years – Good Counsel Staten Island will soon be part of the community again!
Recently, I spoke with Dawn Brown who has been working on the reopening project, to get a status report. Dawn said, “The major work has been completed. The entire interior of the home has been freshly painted, and there are new floors and carpet in the majority of the house.” She continued, “We need some minor plumbing work done in the next few weeks, a roofing repair, and some concrete work done on the outside front steps.”
I asked Dawn what reopening the Staten Island home means for her. She said, “It’s really hard for me to put into words what it will mean to the community for the Staten Island house to re-open. Eight beds may not seem like a lot, but it is eight more beds than we have now. Our residents may come from all over, but reopening this home is also a wonderful opportunity for a local mom who may be working or going to school and is in need of some support.”
Dawn is equally happy that our doors will reopen for our Exodus moms and children who have graduated from Good Counsel to sucessful, independent lives. “We are a family home to our Exodus moms, just like you and I get to go home to see our families on holidays, birthdays, or when we just need a hug or a smile, they come here. We always want our door to be open to them at Christmas, just to talk, or for emergency childcare.”
Dawn expressed her confidence that the community outreach aspect of the home will pick up right where it left off. “Mothers, fathers, and even grandparents who aren’t homeless, but are in need will come to us on a regular basis for advice, diapers, or food in an emergency. We have always provided whatever we could and if we couldn’t provide something, we would help them find what they needed somewhere.”
Now that the home is just about finished and ready for residents – there are some things that are needed to make the Staten Island house a home. If you would like to donate any of the following items or perhaps make a monetary donation toward the purchase of items for the home, please give Dawn a call at 718-619-1978.
- Outdoor furniture such as picnic tables and outdoor toys for the children
- Pretty linens and curtains for the bedrooms and three bathrooms
- Window coverings for all of the common areas
