Spa Night on Staten Island

Posted by | Sep 24, 2015 | No Comments

Homeless, pregnant, young women come to our door heavily burdened by their lives. The circumstances surrounding a woman before she arrives at our doorstep could cause the strongest person to despair. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is to demonstrate how we genuinely care about each woman whom we serve. While the primary focus of our mission is the safety, shelter, and food we provide… sometimes, a young lady just needs some pampering.

The dedicated staff at our recently re-opened Staten Island home hosted a spa night for our moms, and it was a smashing success! Taking up the suggestion by one of the moms, the staff got busy preparing for a fun night of special treatment. Read More

Rest in Peace Fr. Benedict Groeschel

During Good Counsel’s 30th anniversary we have done a number of things to celebrate and to thank Our Lord for the many blessings He has given us.

In remembering the past and the humble growth over the years, there is still sadness experienced today as we continue to mourn the loss of Good Counsel’s co-founder, Father Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R.

Recently there was a birthday celebration in Newark, New Jersey where we gave thanks and celebrated the life of Father Benedict. Since many of you could not attend, I thought you might like to see this short video I did and give you an opportunity to see the site where our friend is laid to rest. Read More

Urgent September Need

Posted by | Sep 22, 2015 | No Comments

Our kitchen cupboards are almost bare.

Today, we are critically short of the essentials—simple food items like peanut butter, eggs, bread, milk—and especially baby formula.

How could such a crisis arise?

The answer is both a blessing and a struggle—many more pregnant women than expected have come seeking help. And we never turn anyone away. EVER.

Gina is just one example. Read More

Pro Abortion & the Fear of Mercy

Posted by | Sep 10, 2015 | 2 Comments

In the past week I have read many articles from the secular media regarding the Pope Francis’ words on the Sacrament of Reconciliation and abortion. Two of them stand out. The first was an article from Cosmopolitan magazine, ”I Don’t Need Forgiveness for My Abortion,”  and the second from the Huffington Post, “Pope Francis, Inequality & Abortion.” Both are left-leaning publications that are clearly pro-abortion. Both seem to be terrified at the thought of the Church offering mercy and forgiveness for abortion.

Of course, mercy and forgiveness after abortion are nothing new.  Mercy and forgiveness have always been available in the Catholic Church for those who want it.  However, the coming “Jubilee Year of Mercy” is sounding the trumpet far and wide, putting the secular world on notice, letting those who may have fallen away from the church know they are, and always have been, welcomed back. That is a definite threat to the pro abortion movement who has depended on their script of the big, bad, dark church being responsible for any negative feelings you experience as a result of an abortion. They have done an excellent job of making women feel as though forgiveness from the church is impossible, and sadly because of their own feelings, women have bought in to it. Read More

What Happens When Our 24/7 Helpline Rings at 3AM?

It simply isn’t possible to talk too much about the selfless and dedicated staff of Good Counsel. Though much of their work is done “in secret,” we know who sees all that they do and are sure of their reward in Heaven. But, that doesn’t stop us from bragging just a little about them – if only to garner more prayers of thanksgiving for these unique souls.

Recently, a 27-year-old woman named Angelica from Plainfield, New Jersey called our 24/7 Helpline at three o’clock in the morning. She spoke to Sandra and told her that she was running out of options. Sandra said, “Angelica told me that she was five months pregnant and has a two-year-old child, whom she was considering giving up for adoption. Her plan was then to terminate her current pregnancy.” Sandra continued, “the young lady’s mother was already staying in a shelter and so Angelica was forced to remain with a cousin, where she and her daughter were sleeping in a reclining chair.” Read More

Throughout this year we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of Good Counsel, and we have put together a timeline that you may find interesting in seeing how many developments and accomplishments we have experienced.

God has blessed us in many ways during the last three decades and He is not done yet!

The latest item on our timeline is the re-opening of our Good Counsel home on Staten Island. Many people have prayed, volunteered, and contributed to this re-opening, and we are very grateful to be able to increase the number of mothers and babies we care for. Read More
