Homeless, pregnant, young women come to our door heavily burdened by their lives. The circumstances surrounding a woman before she arrives at our doorstep could cause the strongest person to despair. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is to demonstrate how we genuinely care about each woman whom we serve. While the primary focus of our mission is the safety, shelter, and food we provide… sometimes, a young lady just needs some pampering.
The dedicated staff at our recently re-opened Staten Island home hosted a spa night for our moms, and it was a smashing success! Taking up the suggestion by one of the moms, the staff got busy preparing for a fun night of special treatment.
The “GC Spa” offered manicures, pedicures, wash and blow outs, and hair straightening. While the moms were pampered, babies were well taken care of by staff members who were on duty and by some who came to the home on their own time to help.
Ebi Ogbu, House Manager, said of the night, “The moms were very happy to receive some TLC from the staff and very appreciative. It was our way of giving back to them beyond our job descriptions.” Ebi continued, “The moms appreciated being pampered in a familiar, but long‑overdue, way. They needed a relaxing night when they could forget about all of the heavy issues for a moment and just enjoy themselves.”
Ebi and her staff do have plans for future spa nights. “We’d like to do one every two months if possible.”
Would you like to donate beauty items for spa night? Nail polish, nail polish remover, manicure and/or pedicures sets, and tubs for foot soaking would be appreciated! Please contact Ebi if you would like to make a donation for future spa nights on Staten Island.
