It simply isn’t possible to talk too much about the selfless and dedicated staff of Good Counsel. Though much of their work is done “in secret,” we know who sees all that they do and are sure of their reward in Heaven. But, that doesn’t stop us from bragging just a little about them – if only to garner more prayers of thanksgiving for these unique souls.
Recently, a 27-year-old woman named Angelica from Plainfield, New Jersey called our 24/7 Helpline at three o’clock in the morning. She spoke to Sandra and told her that she was running out of options. Sandra said, “Angelica told me that she was five months pregnant and has a two-year-old child, whom she was considering giving up for adoption. Her plan was then to terminate her current pregnancy.” Sandra continued, “the young lady’s mother was already staying in a shelter and so Angelica was forced to remain with a cousin, where she and her daughter were sleeping in a reclining chair.”
Sandra contacted the Hoboken office early the next morning. John Donlan of the Hoboken Administrative Staff answered the call. John wears many hats at Hoboken, and one of his attributes is often a reliable vehicle with a full tank of gas. John and Silvana reached out to a contact at a local medical center who donated and car seat and then picked up pregnant Angelica and her daughter in New Jersey. Asked if she were hungry, Angelica first said no, but then flashed a smile and said she and her little girl would love a real breakfast. They stopped at a good diner and then, in happier spirits, drove to Spring Valley. At the Good Counsel Home, Angelica was given her own room, with a crib, a bed, and necessary supplies.
The next morning, Angelica commented how very grateful she was to have slept in such a comfortable bed, the most comfortable bed she had had in a long time.
This is just one of so many, sadly similar, stories about what happens when our 24/7 Helpline rings. It is rarely a good thing when a phone rings in the middle of the night, but it is good that Good Counsel is here for those who need us in the dark of night. Our dedicated office staff, like superheroes, may spend their days processing donations to keep our homes open and working, but they always feel truly blessed when they are able to personally assist a Good Counsel mother and her children.
Our prayer is always to answer the call that comes from a frightened mother in desperate need of shelter, hope, and love. Once she gets a good night’s sleep in a comfy bed, we can then, together, begin the work of a new life.
