More than 220 people came out on a cold rainy night in Manhattan to celebrate life and Good Counsel’s first Father Benedict Groeschel Award Dinner which honored Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, and Chair for Pro Life Activities for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Cardinal Dolan graciously accepted Good Counsel’s award and said he was honored to be associated with the agency which was co-founded by Father Benedict in 1985. “I can think of no better work to be involved in than Good Counsel,” the Cardinal told the packed dining room at the Union League Club in midtown Manhattan.
Preceding the award ceremony, a short video tribute to Father Benedict was played for the audience and was received with thunderous applause. “I was moved to tears watching that video,” said Marjule Drury, the sister of the late Good Counsel co-founder who passed away in October 2014. “I needed to hold the hand of the person next to me. It was so beautiful,” she said choking back further tears.
Additional applause came for Isabelle, a former resident, who now has a three-year old boy thanks to the caring staff and volunteers of Good Counsel. “I know that without the support I received I would have had an abortion,” she told the audience.
