Welcome to the Year of Mercy!

“Here, then, is the reason for the Jubilee: because this is the time for mercy. It is the favorable time to heal wounds, a time not to be weary of meeting all those who are waiting to see and to touch with their hands the signs of the closeness of God, a time to offer everyone the way of forgiveness and reconciliation.”
– Pope Francis

Prayer for the Year of Mercy

Lord Jesus Christ who is Mercy Himself
We entrust ourselves and our children to Your care.
We believe in Your love for us and Your desire for our healing.
We pray in this “Year of Mercy” for the return
Of countless souls to Your heart.
We embrace our cross with Yours
knowing it is there we will find the love deep enough
to heal our wounds.
Jesus, we trust in You!

Hello. My name is Theresa Bonopartis and I am the director of Lumina/Hope & Healing After Abortion & the co-developer of the Entering Canaan ministry.

I would like to begin with a quote from “Divine Mercy in my Soul,” the autobiography of St. Faustina, a Polish nun to whom Jesus appeared desiring for her to spread to the world His attribute of mercy.  I have used this quote in ending my personal witness story of healing after abortion for over 20 years now because it speaks to my soul of what His is mercy is about.

“[Let] the greatest sinners place their trust in My mercy. They have the right before others to trust in the abyss of My mercy. My daughter, write about My mercy towards tormented souls. Souls that make an appeal to My mercy delight Me. To such souls I grant even more graces than they ask. I cannot punish even the greatest sinner if he makes an appeal to My compassion, but on the contrary, I justify him in My unfathomable and inscrutable mercy.”

We often hear people say that faith makes those who have had an abortion feel shame and guilt, but the truth is the total opposite. True faith will free you from shame and guilt. I know that this is true. December 8, 2015 marks the opening of the Extraordinary Year of Mercy in the Catholic Church.

It is no secret that those of us who have experienced abortion are longing for mercy. Many of us have sat in our church pews for years waiting to hear just one word that there was a chance for forgiveness, healing, and hope. Now, Pope Francis is sounding the trumpet!

On Divine Mercy Sunday in 2015 in speaking about the coming year of mercy he said:

“Here, then, is the reason for the Jubilee: because this is the time for mercy. It is the favorable time to heal wounds, a time not to be weary of meeting all those who are waiting to see and to touch with their hands the signs of the closeness of God, a time to offer everyone the way of forgiveness and reconciliation.”

In truth, the Catholic Church has always offered reconciliation from abortion. Sadly because of the secular media and even our lack of speaking about forgiveness while always addressing the wrong of abortion, the church has been always made to seem like it condemns those who have had an abortion, and because of this there has always been a fear of coming forward. But, if we listen to the beautiful prayers of our church, we would realize she has always been waiting for us in order to bring us the reconciliation, forgiveness, and love that God, and even our aborted children, desire us to have.

And so I invite you to answer the call to mercy by contacting us here at Lumina at 1-877-586-4621 or email at lumina@postabortionhelp.org.

Healing from abortion is multifaceted because it impacts us on emotional, spiritual, psychological, and sometimes, physical level. We are here to help you find the help you need in order to heal through retreats, spiritual direction, or professional counseling, as well as peer support.

In this Year of Mercy, we pray that countless numbers of those who are suffering in silence from a past abortion, those in our families, workplaces, communities, and yes, even our pews, will accept the invitation to mercy that Our Lord is extending through the Church in this Jubilee Year of Mercy that Pope Francis has proclaimed.

Jesus we trust in you!
