The Journey to Infinite Mercy

Today’s Readings: Joel 2: 12-18; 2 Corinthians 5: 20-6: 2; Matthew 6: 1-6, 16-18

The prophet Joel calls us today to start up our spiritual journey with our whole heart as we fast. Why do we fast and abstain from pleasure? Because we know we are sinners and in great need of God’s mercy. Every journey needs to begin with a first step, and today we take a step into church to receive ashes so we may be marked by an outward sign that signifies an inner decision to repent and accept God’s mercy.

When a homeless, pregnant mother picks up a telephone and calls Good Counsel’s 800-Helpline, she too is taking a first step. It is a step towards life and not death. Let us pray that our outer sign of ashes on our forehead today will inspire others to choose life.

Prayer for Today

Merciful Lord, the journey I am undertaking will be long and it may be filled with stumbling blocks, but keep me faithful and resolute as I journey toward your merciful love. Amen.

Today we also hear from Good Counsel’s President, Christopher Bell, with a video message for this Ash Wednesday.
