On Sunday, April 24, 2016, please join supporters and staff as we celebrate the five-year anniversary of our doors being opened on April 6, 2011, for homeless, pregnant mothers seeking shelter, safety, and support.
The celebration will begin with a Noon Mass at Saint Casimir Church, Resurrection Parish, 502 New Jersey Avenue, Riverside, New Jersey.
We are pleased to have Bishop David M. O’Connell, Bishop of Trenton, as our celebrant!
Mass will be followed by light refreshments and a tour of the Riverside Good Counsel Home.
The Riverside, New Jersey Home is the first Good Counsel Home to open in South Jersey. Good Counsel Homes was originally founded to address the needs of homeless, pregnant women in New York in 1985 by Fr. Benedict Groeschel and Christopher Bell. Four additional homes are currently operational in the New York Metropolitan Area.
The Riverside Home has witnessed the birth of 54 babies in the five years since opening their doors. Over 33,000 nights of shelter and support have been provided since 2011. While in residence, mothers have earned their GEDs and we have had mothers graduate from Lourdes Nursing School, Cathedral Culinary School, Real Estate School, and Clinical Nursing Programs. Other Moms have attended community and county colleges, and still others attended work-related programs while working part-time or full-time jobs.
The Riverside Home, the former St. Casimir’s convent, has nine private bedrooms, kitchen, dining, and family rooms, a colorfully painted “zoo theme” child care room, and a chapel. Our inn is “never full” and sometimes mothers in need sleep on cots in our residence. Staffed 24/7, Good Counsel provides a family like atmosphere with all residents sharing the responsibilities of taking care of the home.
The mothers participate in Life Skills Programs attending weekly classes on nutrition, post/pre-natal education, general parenting, chastity, spirituality, finances, job preparedness, health, and computer skills. The goal of all Good Counsel Homes is to help find the residents full-time employment, safe and secure housing, and to become financially and physically independent while becoming contributing members of society.
We are so very grateful to Bishop David M. O’Connell, Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan, and the clergy and parishioners of the Trenton and Camden dioceses for all their prayers and donations since we opened our doors five years ago.
The celebration of this important milestone will continue with several upcoming events. Save the dates!
