Good Counsel a Safe Haven for Pregnant Mothers

Posted by | May 27, 2016 | No Comments

On May 6th, Good Counsel held its Annual Ball for Life in Manhattan, New York.  The evening began with a Mass for Life at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, with Deacon Peter Venezia, who has baptized many Good Counsel babies, assisting at Mass.

The evening proceeded at the Racquet and Tennis Club with great camaraderie, from the reception, throughout the well-received talks and delicious dinner, dancing to the music of the talented Glenn Drewes Orchestra, and ending with the always greatly anticipated jewelry auction.  Superbowl Champion Matt Birk and his wife, Adrianna, stalwart prolife advocates, were honored with Good Counsel’s Reflection Award for their heroic witness to the Culture of Life, and received a prolonged standing ovation. Twice the diapers. Twice the costs. Twice the anxiety!

Posted by | May 25, 2016 | No Comments

Seeing double, Sarah’s future looked twice as bleak.  Fleeing a violent boyfriend, homeless with nowhere to turn, and pregnant . . . with twins!

Twice the diapers.  Twice the clothing. Twice the costs. Twice the anxiety. Sarah showed up at Good Counsel’s door scared and utterly hopeless. “I don’t know what I’m going to do,” she said. “I don’t have the financial means . . .”

Sarah needed a safe place to stay.  More than that, she needed someone to care; someone to slip an arm around her shoulder, to assure her there is hope! Read More

Good Counsel Brings the Gospel of Love to Life

Posted by | May 10, 2016 | No Comments

Five years ago, on April 6, 2011, the doors to the Good Counsel South Jersey home were opened.  Some wondered if it would take a long time for the nine rooms to be filled with mothers in need.  By the end of that April, the South Jersey home was full and has stayed at 100% capacity ever since.

A beautiful anniversary celebrating life was held April 24, 2016.  The South Jersey home was honored to welcome the Most Rev. David M. O’Connell, Bishop of Trenton, as celebrant of the Mass.  Joining Bishop O’Connell to concelebrate Mass were Father JC Garrett, Father Gerald Johnson, and Father Joel Wilson. Read More

Happy Birthday, Ariana!

Posted by | May 10, 2016 | No Comments

Loyal readers of the Good Counsel Blog will already know Ariana and her mom, Molly.  For those of you who don’t, this dynamic duo successfully completed the program at Good Counsel Staten Island and regularly keep in touch with us.

Molly & Arianna from mother's day

Molly’s Facebook Post for Ariana’s Birthday

In 2009, Molly arrived at the front door of our home on Staten Island on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in February.  She was 26 years old and 7 months pregnant. Like so many of our moms, Molly had been in an abusive relationship with her child’s father and he was demanding that she have an abortion. Fearful for the safety of both herself and her unborn child, she fled to her parents’ home.  Things worked for a while there, but then Molly found herself in need of somewhere else to live – we gladly opened the door and welcomed her into the Good Counsel family. What Mother’s Day Means to a Good Counsel Mom

Posted by | May 8, 2016 | 2 Comments

In honor of mothers everywhere, Good Counsel celebrates Mother’s Day with some beautiful reflections from a mother in our Riverside, New Jersey home.  Daveeda, who came to Good Counsel with her older children, fleeing an abusive relationship, arrived in a poor mental and emotional state.  Once the door was opened to her, she found love, encouragement, warmth, and the support and resources necessary to take the next best step for herself and her family. By God’s Grace, Brenda Found Good Counsel Homes

Posted by | May 5, 2016 | No Comments

It’s life’s highest calling—being a mom. But for many of the moms in Good Counsel’s homes, it’s bittersweet. That’s how it was for Brenda on Mother’s Day last year. “I was on the street . . . and pregnant,” she explains. “Instead of having a marriage and a beautiful wedding and happy life, I was homeless . . . with a baby about to come.” Brenda had nowhere to go and no one to turn to. By God’s grace, she found Good Counsel Homes. Read More
