Talk about a success story!
A beautiful young woman named Georgeth arrived at Good Counsel Malta House last summer and was about three months pregnant at the time. She had her baby boy, Draeden, shortly afterward in the fall. Draeden captured the heart of everyone he met with his beautiful smile.
During her stay at Malta House, Georgeth studied for and earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (“CNA”) license. While working as a CNA, Georgeth also participated in Life Skills classes and received Mentoring for a positive self-image. Good Counsel Case Managers offered services regarding personal finance and budgeting.
With new found confidence and support from the staff and volunteers, Georgeth soon saved up enough money to buy a car and secure an apartment of her own near to her mother in North Carolina. Focused on the upcoming move, she landed not one, but two jobs as a home healthcare aide. Georgeth is nothing short of amazing and will certainly accomplish much more in her new life with her son.
When it came time for the bittersweet goodbye – the moms, children, and staff members of Malta House planned a going away party to send Georgeth and Draeden off in style. They both will be sorely missed at the house, but the success that she had obtained is ultimately the end goal of the Good Counsel program and Georgeth is a success and then some! The staff and residents look forward to staying in touch with Georgeth for updates on their wonderful new life.
In Fairfield County alone, there are over 300 births each year to unmarried women ages 18-24 who are living below the poverty line and having their first or second child. Over 110 women are receiving homelessness/housing services who are pregnant or parenting between the ages 14-24 (30% of total homeless) and “211” reports that approximately 80% of women who request housing are put on a waiting list.
Malta House is the only home for pregnant women above the age of 18 in Fairfield County, and one of a limited number of programs for young homeless mothers and their babies. And there is no waiting list.
Support from the community is vital. Your contribution to Malta House ensures a young mother gains financial independence, emotional stability, and healthy parenting skills. If the mother thrives, so does her child. Our community becomes stronger when its members are stronger.
