Get to Know Our Honoree – A Q&A with Fr. Gerald Murray

Posted by | December 04, 2018 | News | No Comments

The 2018 Annual Award Dinner is a little over a week away, but there is still time to get your ticket for what is sure to be a fantastic evening celebrating life!

We are delighted to have as the Father Benedict Groeschel Award Honoree, The Reverend Gerald E. Murray, JCD, Pastor of The Church of the Holy Family, New York City.  You may already know Fr. Murray from his appearances as a commentator on religious topics on various television and radio outlets, including EWTN, Fox News, MSNBC, Relevant Radio, and the Voice of America.

However, before the Award Dinner on December 10th, we wanted to get to know Father Murray a little better and share what we learned with you!  Please enjoy our conversation with Father Murray as he talks about his connection to Good Counsel homes.

Q.  How did you become involved with Good Counsel?

I worked with Chris Bell in the Family Life Office of the Archdiocese of New York in the late 1980s. I followed with great interest his work with Good Counsel homes. Fr. Benedict Groeschel taught me at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie. I was always impressed how Fr. Benedict inspired others to get involved in hands-on pro-life work. Chris Bell was the right man for the job of founding and sustaining Good Counsel homes. I am a supporter of Good Counsel, as is my mother and my late father.

Q.  Why do you think places like Good Counsel are essential?

Offering shelter and support to expectant mothers in difficult circumstances is a real act of Christian love that is especially pleasing to God and reminds our society that there is a loving alternative to the violence of killing unborn children.

Q.  What would you want others who may not know about Good Counsel to know?

Chris and his staff make possible the extension of the pro-life mission to many, many women and children who need help and guidance, and do not know where to turn. Good Counsel is there for them. The Catholic Church carries out her mission of salvation and loving concern for our neighbor through the dedication of people such as Chris Bell and his team.

Q.  How do you feel about being this year’s Honoree at the Father Benedict Groeschel Award Dinner?

I met Fr. Benedict when I entered the seminary in 1980. I learned a lot in his classes and stayed in touch with him over the years. He was always friendly and available for advice and to answer questions. I admired his courage in defending the Church amidst the many challenges within and without. His support of the anti-abortion cause was an example of his total dedication to Christ. He used his intelligence and energy to promote the work of the Church in a whole variety of ways: pro-life activities, writing books, EWTN, lectures, spiritual retreats, and seminary teaching.

Q.  Before his passing, Fr. Benedict told Chris Bell to “just grow” Good Counsel homes.  How would you like to see Good Counsel grow?

My hope is that Good Counsel can expand in the New York Metropolitan area as this is the abortion capital of the United States. We need alternatives to abortion such as Good Counsel to become better known. That means advertising and online publicity which is why financial support is necessary and why events like the Annual Dinner are important.

Thank you, Father Murray, for taking the time to tell us a little about yourself and your relationship with Father Benedict and Good Counsel homes!

We asked Father Murray if there were anything else he would like to share, and he responded,

“Chris Bell married one of the true pro-life heroines of our times, Joan Andrews. They have a beautiful family. They love the Lord and work for the Lord’s most threatened ones, our unborn brothers and sisters. They deserve our support. Legalized abortion is a national horror and disgrace – but, Good Counsel exemplifies the growing culture of life in our country. God is pleased with this work of love and faith. We should be honored to be part of this great effort that helps mothers and their unborn children.”
