From Homeless to Belle of the Ball

Since Good Counsel opened in 1985 for homeless, pregnant mothers in need, over 7,800 women have found their way to us.  Each mother has a story.  Most are sad, some heartwrenching, but every so often the divine providence that brings a mother to us is revealed in a way that reminds all of us why we do what we do and that there is always… always, hope.

At the 2019 From the Heart Ball, a mother from one of our homes held the attention of every person in a swanky NYC ballroom as she stood at the podium and told her story.  Before she found Good Counsel, Katrina told the audience she was “hopeless enough to think that no life for my baby would be better than a life with me.” Read More

A Baby is an Awesome Anniversary Present!

Please join us in welcoming Baby Girl Kalana, the 1,168th baby we’ve welcomed since opening our doors in 1985.  Kalana was born on March 10, 2019 which also happens to be the Anniversary Date of Good Counsel opening!  This year marks 34 years of helping homeless, pregnant mothers!  Beautiful Kalana was 6 pounds, 10 ounces.   She and her mom are doing very well!  If you haven’t already, make sure you subscribe to our emails so you don’t miss out on any breaking baby news in 2019! Here’s to 34 Years of Saving Lives!

Dear Friend,

A Sunday in Lent for Roman Catholics is considered a Resurrection Day, a break from fasting. That’s not been easy for me to embrace.

“Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’” Jesus said, “For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Matthew 9:13).

Those words first struck me days before I moved onto 8th Avenue in Manhattan to work with homeless kids. That’s where I first met a homeless young mother. I’m still trying to learn the meaning of those words. Read More
