Good Counsel is blessed by donors near and far who generously support our ministry in traditional fundraising ways like events, walks, dinners, and even formal galas. But lately we’ve noticed that others are fundraising for Good Counsel on their own!
We are so grateful for these inspiring, creative people who have raised funds in fun and unique ways. We wanted to share their ideas and some others with you if you would like to help homeless, pregnant mothers take the next best step in life. Read More
It is hard to believe that it is now three years since my dear friend and Good Counsel co-founder, Father Benedict Groeschel, CFR, passed away. He died on October 3, 2014 on the eve of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
Before his passing, when I asked for his advice, Fr. Benedict told me to “just grow.” Just three years later, we now have seven homes with the addition of Good Counsel Mary’s Shelter Gulf Coast and Good Counsel Malta House of CT. On average 115 mothers and babies are cared for each day at Good Counsel. Read More
2 Bronx Babies born 8 minutes apart at 2 different hospitals!
We talk a lot about how Good Counsel isn’t just a shelter, it’s a home. We also talk a lot about how the mothers, babies, staff, and volunteers are like a family, often times a very tight-knit family.
That closeness was illustrated at the Bronx home on September 7th as two moms went into labor at the same time! Each mom was transported to the hospital – but not the same hospital. Once they arrived at different hospitals, they gave birth to their babies within 8 minutes of each other! Read More
A Fairfield County landmark giving hope to pregnant women for nearly two decades has entered a collaboration to expand and enhance its help for mothers and their babies.
Malta House, which opened in Norwalk in 1998 to feed and shelter homeless women from all backgrounds eager to keep their unborn children, today officially debuts a new collaboration that renames the home Good Counsel Malta House of Connecticut.
“We’ve formed a collaboration with Good Counsel maternity homes, already well respected in the tri-state area and beyond, to extend our community’s mission improving the lives of moms and infants,” said Kim Petrone, Chair of Malta House. Read More
I have an urgent message regarding Hurricane Harvey’s impact on Good Counsel Mary’s Shelter–our home in the Gulf Coast region. As millions are affected by Hurricane Harvey, House Manager of Good Counsel’s Gulf Coast home, Linda Glover, says, “We are preparing for an influx of new residents from Texas and Louisiana. We are already over capacity, but I will not turn any pregnant mom away. I have gathered the roll-aways to place in the chapel, and we have pull-out sofa beds in the living room.” Read More
21-year-old Michelle is an inspiration. The 1,200 mile journey that brought her to Good Counsel did not dampen her determination. Now, her perseverance is paying off!
Michelle was living in Florida with the father of her baby, Laylaniz, who was born in May. Sadly, and all too common with the women we serve, Michelle’s living situation became violent and she had to flee for the safety of herself and her baby girl. She finally made it to her mother’s home in New Jersey. However, because her mother lives in a 55+ community, Michelle’s time there was limited. Now what? Read More
All of our homes have been a flurry of excitement as of late. From the baby boom down at Mary’s Shelter Gulf Coast to the five local homes here in the north, baby blessings abound!
Please welcome baby girl Xanitah, who just happens to be the 1,082nd (!) baby born into the Good Counsel family. Her mom, K’Shonna, is a resident at one of our New York homes. Xanitah was born on August 21st at 3:42 a.m. She weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces. Mom and baby are doing very well, bonding, and getting to know one another. Wait until you see how cute she is!
Good Counsel Mary’s Shelter Gulf Coast is filled with life, love, and babies! So many babies!
Mary’s Shelter recently marked the one year anniversary of its opening for homeless, pregnant mothers in the Gulf Coast area. The home was at full capacity in a very short time. The Mary’s Shelter House Manager recently reported that she had six (6!) pregnant mothers all due within weeks of each other in June and July.
And then the babies came! Read More
