Since Good Counsel opened its DayStar Home in 1999 on the grounds of St. Vincent’s Behavioral Healthcare Hospital, this unique residence for pregnant women, who have mental illness and who may also be dual diagnosed with an addiction, has helped mothers make the difficult transition from suffering with long-term mental and physical challenges to become stable and loving mothers and productive citizens in the communities in which they live. Christopher Bell, Executive Director of Good Counsel Homes, recently traveled to North Dakota to share his many years of experience in helping mothers and children. Chris was the guest of Mary Pat Jahner, who is the Director of Saint Gianna’s Maternity Home in Minto. The North Face Endurance Challenge is a marathon that is not for the faint of heart. Participants who take on the 26.2 mile trail in Bear Mountain State Park journey along the western shoreline of the Hudson River and through the rugged terrain in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. Runners of all levels and experience will often cite a motivating purpose behind their wanting to push the limits of their bodies and to train ever further. Our Bronx home recently had a very exciting visitor! Yoon Sun Cho, Minister of Gender Equality & Family for the Republic of Korea, spent time in our Good Counsel home as part of her recent trip to the United States. While in New York City for the session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, Minister Cho and some of her delegates toured our home and spent time speaking with and observing our staff and residents and also spent some time with our toddlers. In February of 2012, Iris came to Good Counsel Homes pregnant with twins. Iris’s path to Good Counsel’s door was not an easy one. A mental health hospitalization subsequently caused the loss of her job. Losing her job then led to the inevitable loss of her apartment. With the deck stacked against her and now two little lives depending on her, Iris needed help not just with food and shelter; she needed hope, healing, and love for all three of them. Read More
