We love that line from You’ve Got Mail because it captures something we all recognize about this time of year: the excitement of a fresh start. There is something hopeful about a new school year—the new pencils, the new backpacks, the new goals and the feeling that anything might be possible. That sense of possibility is especially beautiful to witness at Good Counsel.

This fall, we are watching mothers in our homes take courageous steps toward their own futures. Some are returning to school. Some are working toward their GED. Some are beginning training for careers in healthcare or the skilled trades. Others are preparing for careers where they can serve underserved communities. And behind each of those steps is a mother who is saying, in her own way, I want something better for myself and for my children. We want to help her say yes.

At Good Counsel, we believe that helping a mother in crisis means more than providing a safe place to stay while she gets back on her feet. Food, clothing, shelter, and other immediate needs are essential, but they are only the beginning. Our hope is that a mother leaves Good Counsel not simply having survived a difficult chapter, but having grown stronger and more prepared to build the next one. Education and career training are an important part of that transformation.

Getting there isn't always easy. A mother may be trying to balance classes, studying, childcare, appointments, work, and all the responsibilities that come with raising a child. She may be starting from a place where she has had very few educational or professional opportunities. That is why Good Counsel works so hard to find the resources that can help make these dreams possible. Our staff actively seek out grants, scholarships, career-training opportunities, and educational programs for the mothers in our homes. Organizations such as the Knights of Columbus have provided grants to help mothers return to school and pursue their goals. These resources allow us to do something incredibly important: say yes.

When a mother tells us that she wants to go back to school, learn a trade, finish her GED, or prepare for a career, we don't want financial circumstances to be the reason she has to give up on that dream. We want to help her find a way forward. And that same commitment extends to her children.

As mothers return to school or begin career training, their children are also taking their own steps forward. Children in Good Counsel's care may attend daycare programs, local schools, or specialized programs designed to meet particular educational or developmental needs. Our case managers work alongside mothers and schools to make sure those needs are identified and addressed. They pursue available services, financial assistance, special education resources, and other support when necessary. This advocacy matters tremendously. Children growing up below the poverty line face a greater risk of falling behind in school, and we don't want a child's circumstances to become a permanent barrier to his or her future. When a child needs additional help, our case managers work to find it. When a school has resources available, we help families navigate the process of accessing them. Because when we say that we are caring for a mother and her child, we mean caring for the whole family.

As we watch this year's school year begin, we know that none of these accomplishments happen because of one person or one program. They happen because people like you believe these mothers and children are worth investing in. Your support provides the practical resources that make these opportunities possible. Your generosity helps provide the programs, services, and assistance that allow a mother to pursue a future instead of simply trying to survive the present. And your prayers matter just as much. In fact, we would argue that they are essential. The right tools can open a door. A scholarship can make school possible. A case manager can help navigate the system. A career-training program can provide a path to employment. But it takes something more to keep going when the work gets hard. It takes perseverance, courage, hope and grace. We see those qualities in our mothers every day.

They are studying for exams while caring for their children. They are learning new skills. They are walking into classrooms where they may feel uncertain or intimidated. They are applying for jobs, preparing for interviews, and imagining themselves in careers they may never have believed were possible. Their circumstances have not disappeared. But they are moving forward anyway.

That is why we ask you, as you begin this new school year, to pray for them. Pray for the mother sitting down to study for her GED. Pray for the mother beginning a healthcare program or learning a skilled trade. Pray for the mother who isn't quite sure what her next step will be, but knows she wants something better for herself and her children. Pray for the children heading into new classrooms, new schools, and new programs. Pray that they will have the support they need to learn and thrive. And pray for our case managers and staff as they walk alongside these families, finding resources, opening doors, and helping mothers turn hopes into plans.

There is something beautiful about a new school year because it reminds us that we are always capable of learning, growing, and beginning again. At Good Counsel, we get to see that truth lived out every day. A new class. A new skill. A GED. A first job in a new career. A child making progress in school. A mother discovering that the future she once only dreamed about might actually be within reach. These may seem like small steps. But these are the steps that change lives.
