Some news settles heavily on the heart.
This January, we mourned the passing of Vielka—one of our former Good Counsel moms. Every family’s story is layered and often shaped by hardship, but one truth remains constant: when a mother comes to Good Counsel, she becomes part of a family that walks with her not only while she lives in our homes, but long after she steps into a life of her own.

Omyara, a Case Manager from our Staten Island home, shared these reflections on Vielka’s life and passing:

“Our dear Vielka lived in our Staten Island home for four months. She was a joyful young lady who was excited about becoming a new mom. During her stay, she dedicated herself faithfully to God and was baptized alongside the other mothers. She worked hard to improve her life for the better. Recently, she visited with her beautiful daughter and shared the exciting news that she had moved into her own apartment. Today, I received the heartbreaking news that she has passed away, leaving a lasting imprint on our hearts. I am grateful for the laughter and moments we shared. Some people shine too brightly to ever be forgotten.”

At Good Counsel, family doesn’t end when a mom moves out or finds her footing. We continue to care, to advocate, to cheer her on, and to pray—through joys and through heartbreak. Vielka’s life, her faith, her love for her daughter, and the light she brought into our homes will not be forgotten.
