A Change From Within: Melanie's Story
When Melanie arrived at Good Counsel’s Riverside home in the summer of 2016, she carried more than just her belongings. Six months pregnant, with a toddler on her hip, and the weight of years of struggle pressing down on her, Melanie walked through the doors searching for something she had rarely known—stability and hope.
At 32 years old, her life reflected the hardships so many of the women who come to Good Counsel have endured: broken promises, a lack of support, battles with substance abuse, and a deep struggle with self-worth. Behind her quiet, defeated demeanor lay a painful truth—her eight other children were scattered, living in the care of different people.
From her very first days at Good Counsel, Melanie began receiving the care and guidance she so desperately needed. Weekly family therapy sessions gave her space to heal, reflect, and rediscover her own voice. Slowly, she began to share her goals with more confidence. By the time she welcomed her “Christmas bundle of joy” at the end of 2016, she had more than a newborn to celebrate—she had a plan for her future.
Her turning point came in a conversation with her House Manager and Case Manager. “I want something different for myself,” she admitted. With gentle encouragement, they reminded her that it’s never too late to pursue education. Inspired, Melanie enrolled in GED classes. She came close to passing her first exam—just four points shy. Instead of giving up, she asked for more help. With the support of a tutor, she pressed forward, determined to try again.
Education wasn’t the only hurdle. Melanie hadn’t worked in over ten years, and the thought of stepping into the workforce felt overwhelming. Could she really do this? With patience, her Case Manager guided her one step at a time—filling out online applications, practicing interview skills, even preparing the right clothes to wear. Within just 60 days, Melanie received a job offer. Steady work in food service became not just a paycheck, but a source of pride. Each evening, she returned home with a new sense of accomplishment.
During her time at Good Counsel, Melanie experienced a transformation that began from within. What once felt impossible became achievable. She often credits her children as her driving motivation, but she also acknowledges the patience, resources, and encouragement she received at Good Counsel as the foundation of her change.
“I’m thankful for the hope Good Counsel has given me,” she says.
Melanie’s story is one of resilience, second chances, and the belief that with the right support, real change is possible.
