The World Comes to Our Door

This summer, the world has come to America.

For many of the players, supporters, and families following the FIFA World Cup, this is their first visit to the United States. They have traveled thousands of miles carrying more than luggage. They have brought their languages, traditions, songs, hopes, and stories. And whether they leave remembering our stadiums or our skylines, one question remains:

How will they remember us?

As Christians, hospitality has never been about entertaining guests. It is about receiving another person as Christ Himself. Throughout Scripture, God's people are commanded to welcome the stranger, care for the vulnerable, and make room at the table. Hospitality is not merely good manners; it is a virtue rooted in the conviction that every human person bears the image of God.

America has long aspired to be known for this virtue. At our best, we are generous, neighborly, and quick to help those in need. At our worst, we retreat into suspicion, division, and self-interest. Hospitality calls us back to our better selves because it begins with a simple question: Who can I make room for today?

That question extends far beyond visitors from another country.

It reaches the young mother wondering where she will sleep tonight. It reaches the frightened woman who has just discovered she is pregnant. It reaches the child waiting to be welcomed into the world.

At Good Counsel, hospitality looks like a warm meal shared around a table. It looks like a safe bed, a listening ear, a nursery prepared with love, and a community that says, "You belong here." Christian hospitality is not simply opening a door. It is opening our lives.

Perhaps that is why so many of us admire athletes whose greatness is matched by humility.

Lionel Messi, despite winning nearly every honor football has to offer, has repeatedly spoken about his gifts as blessings from God. His gratitude is directed first toward his faith and his family rather than his own accomplishments. True greatness, he reminds us, is received before it is achieved.

Cristiano Ronaldo's story is equally moving. His mother has openly shared that she once considered aborting her pregnancy. Today, Ronaldo not only cherishes his own children but has devoted himself to caring for the family that first cared for him. Imagine how much beauty the world would have lost had that story ended before it began.

Every child carries possibilities that no one—not even their parents—can fully imagine.

But something else is born alongside every child.

A mother.

A father.

A family transformed.

An abortion does not simply end a pregnancy. It also closes countless chapters of a story that will never be written: the first laugh, the first day of school, the unexpected friendships, the healing of relationships, the grandchildren who will never exist, and the quiet ways children call us out of ourselves and into a deeper, more sacrificial love. Our children often become some of God's greatest instruments for our own conversion. They teach us patience, generosity, humility, and joy in ways few other experiences can.

This is why the work of maternity homes matters so profoundly.

Hospitality is more than welcoming those who arrive at our nation's airports this summer. It is welcoming those whose future is still unfolding. It is making room for mothers who feel they have nowhere to turn and children whose stories have only just begun.

If America hopes to renew itself, it will not happen through politics alone. Renewal begins wherever people choose to make room for another. It begins around family dinner tables, inside parish communities, and within homes like Good Counsel's, where every mother is received with dignity and every child is welcomed as a gift.

The world is watching how we welcome our guests.

More importantly, God is watching how we welcome one another.
